HARARE
The sunshine city

Harare derives its name from the Shona word "harare", meaning "one who does not sleep". Zimbabwe's capital and home to nearly 2 million people, this vibrant city is a cosmopolitan blend of modem architecture and colonial buildings, interspersed with public parks and green areas.
It is easy to explore on foot, laid out as it is on a grid System, and made even more pleasing to the eye by tree-lined thoroughfares.

By day Harare is known for its numerous shopping opportunities, which range from the modem shopping centres to the large traditional markets and roadside vendors, with goods as diverse as the city itself.
For a truly African shopping experience, a visit to Mbare Market is a must - here literally everything can be obtained, from clothing to love potions !

After dark, the city vibrates with the local and international sounds; trumpets, guitars and drums.
Bars, hotel and night-clubs are a source of every conceivable musical offering.
For drama there is the Theatre in the Park, Reps Theatre and other locations.
Harare hosts different international festivals such as the week-long Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA).

The number of restaurants in Harare is prodigious, offering both local and international dishes and catering for all budgets. Zimbabwe's steaks and game dishes are not to be missed - they are ranked among the best in the world.
When it comes to accommodation there is something to suit all pockets and tastes.
The city is home to several luxury hotels some belonging to international brands. Beautiful private lodges, smaller hotels, back-packer facilities and bed and breakfast hotels can also be found throughout the city.

Harare & Environs

Within 40 km of the capital are the wildlife attractions at the Lion and Cheetah Park, Larvon Bird Gardens and the Snake Park.
Places of contemporary historical interest range from Heroes Acre to the Tobacco Auction Floors while for the culture-vulture there is the Chapungu Kraal, the National Art Gallery and National Archives.
There are also a number of private galleries. Horticultural enthusiasts should visit the National Botanical Gardens, and those at Ewanrigg, and Mukuvisi Woodlands.
Also of interest to nature lovers is the National Park at Lake Chivero. At the lake, water enthusiasts can enjoy everything from fishing to sailing and water-skiing.

Sport is a national obsession in Zimbabwe, and this is reflected in the number and quality of facilities available.
Cricket tennis, horse-racing and polo are particularly well supported but it is soccer that is the most revered ; matches are capable of pulling crowds sixty thousand strong !
For those interested in slightly more sedate activities, there are also excellent facilities for golf and bowls. Though every major town has at least one golf course there are over a dozen in Harare and its environs!
